“You Have Trampled on the Dignity of Women”
Judge to Joji Obara upon sentencing as serial rapist.
Cautionary Tale:
For those of you thinking of traveling to Japan to work in Hostess Clubs. We urge you to use caution and resist the temptation. There are a great number of cautionary tales which are based ultimately in factual events. None stand out as prominent as the following:
When:
July 2000 woman disappears
February 2001 woman’s remains found
April 24, 2007 Suspect in case Acquitted
Where:
Hostess Bar
Roppongi District
Tokyo, Japan
Victim:
Lucie Blackman a British flight attendant went to Japan to work in a hostess bar. Apparently, she believed she could pay off credit card debt quickly by taking this position. She later paid the ultimate price for this mistake. Her dismembered body was found in a cave in Japan. She disappeared in July 2000. Her body parts were later discovered in a cave near a fishing village outside of Tokyo. Her head had been encased in concrete. She was identified via dental records.
Suspect:
Joji Obara a land developer and business man in Japan. Admitted being in the company of Lucie Blackman the day she disappeared but denies killing her. Her body was discovered February 2001 in a cave in Miura outside of Tokyo and beside Obara’s apartment where he lived.
Facts presented in court:
Joji Obara admits being in company of Blackman day of her disappearance.
Her body was recovered approximately 250 metres from his beachfront home. Her body had been reduced to ten pieces and her head was encased in concrete.
She was identified by dental records.
Details:
While Obara denies any part in the death along with the rape of the other women, he was convicted as a serial rapist. Yet, he was acquitted of Lucie Blackman’s death and her disappearance. Days after Lucie Blackman had gone missing he purchased a chainsaw, vinyl sheeting, and concrete.
Verdict:
The judge sentenced Obara to life imprisonment after finding him guilty in connection with the unlawful death of another 21-year-old, Carita Ridgway - an Australian woman who died of liver failure in February 1992 after being drugged and raped - as well as the rape of eight other women. However, Obara was acquitted of the death of Lucie Blackman.
